Wood Worker's Vise

Shown below is an example of a standard woodworker's vise. It's wide jaws are designed to distribute the force of the jaws over as wide an area of the wood as possible, to both increase the vise's grip and also to decrease the likelihood of marring the wood.

This vise is not designed to hammer on and not intended for metal working. A woodworker's vise is not likely to hold a piece of iron securely, and is probably going to be severely damaged by using it for metalworking.
