Files should not be stored such that they are touching each other. they will last a lot longer if they are stored in individual protective cases. Can be as simple as wraping in a rag or cardboard. Another way to protect the files, is to use short pieces of PVC pipe, each file has its own sleeve, and the pieces of pipe containing the files can be stored vertically in a plastic bucket or box.
