Making a Simple Tong Ring

written by Ted McNett? in the January / February 2008 Hammer & Tong

I learned how to make these simple tong rings from Bruce Jarrell at Randy McDaniel's? Non-ferrous Metal class.

1. Cut 5 ½ to 6 inches of ¼ inch round.

2. Forge a flat taper on each end of the bar about one inch long

3. Using Scroll tongs roll a loop in the center of the bar.

4. Drift the loop to about 3/8 of an inch, if needed.

5. Forge a J- hook on each end.

6. Quench the piece or let air cool 7. Test fit on your tongs. You may adjust the fit cold to tighten or loosen the spread.
