New Edge of the Anvil: A Resource Book for the Blacksmith
Author: Jack Andrews
Publisher: Skipjack Press Drexel Hill, PA 1994
ISBN: 1-879535-09-2
243 Pages, Index, Portfolio, Resources
This book covers all of the basics needed to get started in blacksmithing: shop, tools and process. The chapter on "Metallurgy for the Blacksmith" is particularly good. Clearly written for the non-technical person.
The Portfolio section contains photographs of ironwork by: Martin Rose/Rose Iron Works; Samuel Yellin, Metalworkers; Elizabeth Brim; Fred Crist; Tom Joyce; Nol Putnam; Brad Silberberg; Enrique Vega; and a section on design considerations.
The Resource section contains useful information including tables and charts, and other information. For example: info on abrasives, fraction/decimal/metric conversion, weight of diffferent sizes of steel per foot and per inch, illustration of spark tests, explanation of steel designations, gauge numbers for sheet steel, etc.
The first edition of this book was published as
"The Edge of the Anvil" in 1991. ISBN: 1-879-535-00-9. 210 Pages. One of the major differences between the two editions, is that in the first edition, the Portfolio section only contains picutres of work from the Samuel Yellin Shop.
