Machinist's Vise
The machinist's vise is not intended to be hammered on (in contrast with a
blacksmith's vise which is made to hold items being hammered.) The machinist's vise jaws are usually made of cast iron and will not stand up to the shock of hammering.
- Machinist Vise:
Generally the jaws on a machinists vise are heavily serrated to securely hold an item. Often to protect your work when using a machinist's vise, you will need to make protective jaws, otherwise you will see the vise jaws leave heavy scratches on your work. The protective jaws shown in the picture below are rubber and are only for holding cold items. These are available from woodworking supply stores. To hold hot steel, you will need protective jaws made of aluminum.
