Tips for the Forge

Side Draft Forge Hoods

  • Side draft forge hood: Before lighting the forge you must heat up the hood and chimney for proper draw. Light three or four pieces of crumpled newspaper inside the forge hood. Next light the forge. You may need to keep adding newspaper or wood shavings until there is sufficient draw of the smoke. On very cold days this may require adding 5 or 6 sheets (one at a time as they burn up) for sufficient draw. By Ted McNett?
