Forge

This term refers to both the process as well as a piece of equipment which a blacksmith uses to work hot iron.

In the process of shaping the iron, a smith may use either hand hammers, tongs and other hand tools, or larger equipment such as power hammers, fly press and/or treadle hammers.

The term forge also refers to the piece of equipment that the smith uses to heat the iron to the temperature so to make the metal soft enough to be hammered into a different shape. The most common of these forges are those categorized as coal forges or gas forges
