“Decorative & Sculptural Ironwork” is Dona Z. Meilach's first book on blacksmithing, originally published in 1977. This is an updated version of that book. The 14 Chapters cover: an introduction to the history of blacksmithing going back to earliest times; the shop and tools; the fire; iron and steel; basic forging procedures; the object from simple to challenging; carving animals; gates, grilles and railing; locks, knockers and other hardware; bladesmithing; Damascus steel; mixed metals; sculpture; a gallery of details.

In the various sections she has photo sequences that show various procedures: how to make a scroll, a mortise and tenon joint, a welded basket, a dragon’s head, and others.

This book gives you a comprehensive overview of contemporary blacksmithing, pretty much covering all aspects from the most practical - tool making and hardware to modern art and sculpture. Part of the extended title of the book is the word: “INSPIRATION” and I think that is one of the most important services this book provides. Hundreds of examples to help get the creative juices flowing. I would guess that pretty much many of the major blacksmiths around the country are represented in this book. The book is a little pricey, but if you consider all of the high quality photography, it is well worth it.
