Anvil Tools

Just about all anvils come with a square hardy hole.

This hole is there to hold a wide assortment of tools. The anvil tools have a square shank that should fit snuggly in the hardy hole. The shank can be a piece of solid stock welded onto the bottom of the tool or bolted to the bottom of the tool using a threaded stud. It can also be a piece of square hollow tubing or a piece of rectangular stock bent into a "U".

Hardy holes are almost always square and vary in size from about 3/4" to as large as 1-1/2" to 2". In the past it seemed that the larger the anvil, the larger the hardy hole. Now days, it seems that modern anvil manufacturers are going with 1" square as a standard. This is helpful as now you can have one set of hardy tools that will fit in multiple anvils.

The following is an assortment of anvil tools. It is not always clear from the photographs, but each tool has a hardy shank that locks the tool into the hardy hole.
