Anvil Mounted Cone Mandrels

The following are two examples of smaller cone mandrels that are used on the anvil, as compared to free standing cone mandrels. The first one is a casting and has a tong groove. The groove probably needs to be ground a little deeper and a little wider to be really useful. When this one was acquired it needed quite a bit of sanding to smooth the surface. It was sold "as cast". Also, I had to add the hardy shank. What is not visible in the picture is that there are a number of small voids on the back side of the cone. Such defects are one of the down sides of a casting.

The second example was made by a machinist on a lathe.
